A comprehensive new plan to address homelessness in Cincinnati and Hamilton County hopes to shift focus from emergency beds to transitional and supportive housing and better meet the individual needs of the chronically homeless.
As part of the six-month process of preparing the report, made public Wednesday at City Hall, the Cincinnati / Hamilton County Continuum of Care for the Homeless - which coordinates services and funding for organizations serving the homeless - secured the support of 12 major groups to pay for increases in housing and treatment options.
The sweeping approach is the first of its kind to address homelessness in Cincinnati and Hamilton County.
Council member Roxanne Qualls, who introduced the motion in October to prepare the study, said Wednesday the next step is for council to pass an ordinance that sets up a transition team and prioritizes the report's recommendations.
and in Building Cincinnati:
"The task we gave to the Continuum and those who helped develop this plan was not easy," Qualls says. "Cincinnati has struggled for years to provide adequate shelter for homeless individuals. Our trust and confidence in the Continuum's compassion, expertise and diligence is reflected in this report."
