
The revised route through Downtown and Over-the-Rhine would be followed by an extension to the riverfront. A second phase will include the connection to Uptown, and add an Uptown circulator.The city is also exploring the option of a battery-powered car that could reduce both capital and operating costs for the project.
In presenting the phased construction plan, Mayor Mallory stressed that the city is committed to expanding the streetcar to reach from the zoo to the riverfront, and said he expects the city to break ground this fall. Dohoney said that the city's budget woes over the last several years have made the administration "unapologetic advocates" for the project as a tool to build the city's tax base through development and increased density; and that federal funds can be granted directly to the city despite a recent state budget amendment barring state funding for the streetcar. Dohoney also identified funding sources for the project's operating budget.
